Dangerous Dreams (RCA, Criteria Sound, Miami, FL 1986)

These cuts are from the Dangerous Dreams (Dreams) album.  This is a record that has hardly been heard by anyone.  Which is a shame because we spent a long year writing, arranging and recording demos in our own studio and three months recording it (we had the luxury of working "bankers hours" - 12 noon to 8:00 p.m. and, after all it was Miami so why the rush).  Then upon completion, the project was cut short by a major corporate takeover.  To ad insult to injury, this record was recorded digitally (Mitsubishi 32 track on 2" tape) but was only pressed as a phonograph record.  So there is no CD.  The phonograph record was not well mastered.

RCA only pressed approximately 16,000 copies of this record before the bloodless coup where GE Corp. swallowed NBC Corp. (RCA's parent) whole, spitting out RCA (to BMG) and leaving us well, forgotten.  You can't buy this record and you can't find these songs on any collection.

They were ripped from a CD that my brother made from the phonograph record.  I remastered the ripped WAVs to give them that full modern sound.  Note:  Dreams  was the only record I ever recorded that I did not participate in the mastering.  RCA insisted on sending it down to Criteria Sounds own mastering lab.  I remember listening to a test pressing in one of our executive's office and pronouncing it cr*p.  To RCA's credit they did go back and re-master for a second time and produced a second test pressing.  But it was not much better.  Produced by the legendary Pete Solley (www.petersolleyproductions.com) and wonderfully engineered by Trevor Hallesy.  They worked hard and performed their magic.  You can hear the transformation from our 8 track versions to "big time" product.

(This file is 4.3 MB).  A tune whose genesis was in a drum pattern I had dialed up in our "new-fangled" TR-707 drum machine with a wacky side-stick pattern.  Mike made that beat his own but much bigger.  I can't say enough good about the playing (after all we did play it), but to be fair, Pete and Trevor blew this one out!  Buzz saw power cords and that gunshot tom; they put an edge on everything.  The also got the best out of the rhythm section because we were crankin'.

(This file is 2.3 MB).  Experience the creative process at work.  Taken from a cassette dub off our 8 track dated 9/20/85.  We we were freestyling over this beat I cooked up on our 707 drum machine.  Recorded in our studio.  Live performance.

(This file is 3.7 MB). The follow up to 88 Lines only darker.  Based on one of my drum/bass riffs, it's pure camp. But Marc's style of camp is uncomfortably close to the truth and you can't help but feel that he's taking it personally while making light.  Then some listeners perceive Marc's campy lyrics as "smug."  Maybe so.  Well, "f" 'em if they can't take a joke - even if the truest things are said in jest..

(This file is 4.6 MB).  From the 9/20/85 8 track cassette dub.  Like "Dig" above, Live performance (I think).  Very close to the studio version.  Recorded about 5 months before we went into the studio to do it for real.

(This file is 4.7 MB).  This is our "Stairway to Heaven."  A little Led Zep, a little Deep Purple.  That's real Hammond B3 in there - the real deal!  I have no recollection as to how we came up with this elaborate arrangement except that I do remember that it was a tune that we worked out as a band in live rehearsal, but really honed in live performance.

(This file is 4.7 MB).  This version is an 8 track studio version done in our studio, direct from the 2 track reel-to-reel master.  We had the arrangement down by the time we recorded this version.  Mike was severely held back playing a primitive electronics drum set.
