Sony Studios Nickel Tour - Page  7 - Curiosities

Truth is stranger than fiction.

A 600 pound phonograph turntable

The base is 6 inches of solid granite.  Two three-inch slabs with a layer of polymer in between.

The granite slab sits on 4 pneumatic pistons.  When they crank up the compressor, the slab floats on the pistons like a cork in water.

What good is turntable without a few cartridges?

It's got a radial tonearm.  Only 4 units were ever made.  (I wonder why???).  The brand name is Rockport Technologies.  I guess they had a sense of humor, no?

A really old Scully cutting lathe

In between the Studer 2 inch and Studer 1/2 inch is a real relic.

Now this machine is much older than anything I've ever used.  Note:  there is no cutting head

Look how far we've come.  This is like stone knives and bearskins.

The Oven

It's true!  They have to bake Ampex 456 and 406 from the 80s to keep the oxide from flaking off.  120 degrees F for 10 hours is the recipe that they used.
